Librarians and others from across the Atlantic Ocean came together virtually for a two-day symposium this December, engaging in a rich exchange of professional knowledge and ideas. Co-organized by the University of Georgia Libraries and the University of Liverpool Libraries, Museums, and Galleries, the symposium marked the latest milestone in the decade-long collaboration between these sister universities.

The symposium began with a report on the recently signed agreement naming Liverpool University Press as the exclusive distributor for UGA Press books in the United Kingdom and Europe, and a non-exclusive distributor for other parts of the world.

Visitors to the new Akins Ford Arena at the Classic Center in Athens can explore Georgia music, thanks to a new display installed Dec. 19 by the University of Georgia Special Collections Libraries.

On a larger-than-life video board, The B-52s member and Athens resident Cindy Wilson welcomes visitors to peruse the memorabilia on display, representing more than 200 legendary artists, from Whisperin’ Bill Anderson to Run the Jewels. 

Display cases share memories of concerts, stories about the recording process, fan merchandise and interactions, behind-the-scenes moments, and more. For example, a cold medicine bottle Duane Allman used to make his distinctive slide guitar sounds is on display alongside the Gibson Les Paul he played while recording “Statesboro Blues.”

A new award named after the University of Georgia’s legendary head football coach Vince Dooley and his wife Barbara honors those who share another passion with the beloved family — support for the UGA Libraries.

The University of Georgia Press (UGAP) has selected Liverpool University Press (LUP) as its exclusive distribution partner for the UK and Europe, and non-exclusive partner for the rest of the world outside of the Americas.  UGAP joins University of Michigan Press at the newly launched Liverpool Distribution Services, a new boutique sales, marketing and distribution service offered by LUP that aims to provide a genuine sense of transatlantic university press partnership.

UGAP Director Lisa Bayer said: “I have long admired Anthony Cond’s publishing acumen and the excellent reputation of Liverpool University Press. We are excited about this opportunity to distribute UGA Press books to a wider global audience.”

During a two week stretch this September, University of Georgia Libraries will host three acclaimed authors (and some notable musicians) for fun, free events open to the community, as well as UGA students, faculty, and staff.

The first event celebrates Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Brandon Som and acclaimed Jordanian writer Siwar Masannat to campus to celebrate their recent publications with the Georgia Review Books, an imprint by the Georgia Review with the University of Georgia Press. Som's book Tripas was a finalist for the National Book Award before winning the 2024 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. Masannat's book cue was released in the spring of 2024.

A Q&A scrawled in marker onto a white record sleeve as well as on the vinyl, a hand-painted message on the back of a shovel, a battered straw hat with fraying pink trim, and photographs of pets. These items and dozens more add to the character of the Athens’ music community on display this fall at the UGA Special Collections Libraries along with colorful portraits of the artists taken at their homes.

On Thursday, September 14, 2023, the National Book Foundation announced their longlist of nominees across all categories. Tripas by Brandon Som, copublished by the Georgia Review and the University of Georgia Press, was included on the longlist for poetry.

The University of Georgia Press, a respected publisher of global scholarship, creative and literary works, and general interest books on the American South, announced today its acquisition of NewSouth Books.

Based in Montgomery, Alabama, NewSouth Books is an independent trade publisher widely recognized for its focus on Southern culture and history, particularly civil and human rights. NewSouth was launched in 2000 by Suzanne La Rosa and Randall Williams; La Rosa is the company’s publisher, Williams its editor-in-chief.

La Rosa will join UGA Press on July 1. She will publish 8-12 new titles annually under the NewSouth imprint at UGA Press. Williams will continue to edit selected titles and recommend works for acquisition.

Valerie Boyd, a writer, editor, professor and mentor, will be inducted into the Georgia Writers Hall of Fame later this year.

Fashion that permeated pop culture and politics in the 1960s is on display at the University of Georgia Special Collections Libraries in an exhibit featuring the dresses, prints, and designs of Frankie Welch.
