Summer Renovations at Main and McBay Libraries

Submitted by Camie on

This summer, work will begin on heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems at the Main and McBay Science Libraries at the University of Georgia. Once complete, the projects will enhance the comfort of study spaces at two of UGA’s largest and busiest study facilities.

Due to the construction, patrons can expect noise and disruptions throughout the summer, with the work at the Main Library expected to extend into the fall semester. Some shelving areas will be closed or restricted during construction, but materials may be requested online or through the service desk for pickup at a convenient location.

“These two HVAC projects are necessary mechanical updates that will improve the library learning environment for the university community,” said Toby Graham, university librarian and associate provost. “Please pardon our progress, and we will do all that we can to provide prompt access to materials and study spaces in the meantime.”

At McBay, the project will replace aging HVAC equipment on the third floor while also providing additional study space. The floor will be closed throughout the summer, and the project could cause noise and disruption in other parts of the building. To access books during the floor closure, patrons should request titles online and pick them up at the service desk on McBay’s main floor or one of six other pickup locations on campus. Renovation is expected to wrap up in early August.

At the Main Library, HVAC controls work will begin on the first floor in July and will be conducted in phases over approximately six months, causing temporary closures to various parts of the building through the fall semester.

Access to bookshelves, offices, and study spaces on the south end of the Main Library (the side opposite the entrance) will be disrupted intermittently. Patrons will be alerted to timely construction zone changes via signage. While library staff aim to address requests for materials in the impacted zones, patrons may experience delays in receiving books and may be directed to interlibrary loan or other borrowing services for some items.

To request materials, patrons may visit the service desk at either location or login to the online catalog on our website with their myID and place a request through our catalog.
