McBay Renovation Update: How to Access Materials
At a critical stage in the preparation for renovations, some science-related materials will take longer than normal for patrons to check out, but UGA librarians are hard at work to ease the process.
As part of the project to replace the McBay Science Library’s aging climate control and lighting systems and improve study space for students, the fourth floor has been closed for the academic year with materials available to be retrieved by library staff. From Nov. 1 through March 2024 those books and journals will be unavailable due to a relocation process.
Instead, UGA Libraries will assist patrons in need of those titles to request the items through GIL-Express and interlibrary loan services, which allow the University to borrow materials from partner libraries at other University System of Georgia institutions and other research libraries across the world.
While many of the materials will remain available via electronic access through the UGA Libraries’ website and other search tools, such as Google Scholar, the physical items currently located on the fourth floor will not be found via searches of the online catalog during the relocation.
Patrons who would like to request items are encouraged to fill out the Interlibrary Loan (ILL) form or GIL-Express service to request items from other libraries. Article and book chapter requests take about 1-3 days to fulfill, while physical books can be made available in around 8 days. GIL-Express requests typically take about 3-5 days. Please call (706-542-0643) or email (borrow@uga.edu) the ILL office if you have any questions about borrowing items from another libraries.

Thank you for your patience during this renovation process.
