The University of Georgia Libraries will celebrate research with three virtual events this October. One event features a roundtable with some of the top experts in their field, while another showcases student work, and a third highlights a new resource freely available to researchers across the world.
The first event, scheduled for 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 12, celebrates the launch of the Georgia Open History Library, a free digital resource comprised of nearly 50 academic books exploring the history of Georgia, all of which were published by the UGA Press.
The University of Georgia Press is pleased to announce the launch of the Georgia Open History Library on Oct. 15, 2021. The Georgia Open History Library (GOHL) is an open-access library of nearly fifty digital editions of single-authored scholarly titles and two multivolume series, as well as primary documents going back to the founding of Georgia as a colony up to statehood and beyond.
The University of Georgia’s Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library will participate in a national project to enhance descriptions of slavery and the lives of the enslaved on college campuses, as documented in the archives.
As players and fans enjoy the University of Georgia’s football season, the Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the integration of the Georgia Bulldogs football team with a new museum exhibit Not Only for Ourselves: The Integration of UGA Athletics. The display will open Friday, September 10, at the UGA Special Collections Libraries, with a 3 p.m. tour planned the day before the Bulldogs' home opener.
University of Georgia Libraries locations, including the Miller Learning Center, will expand hours of operation this fall to provide more in-person options for students and patrons during the 2021-2022 academic year.
The Miller Learning Center, the busiest academic building on campus, will be open for 24-hours a day on weekdays, beginning August 18. During weekends, the building will close at midnight Friday night and reopen at 10 a.m. Saturday morning, closing again at midnight Saturday night to reopen at 10 a.m. Sunday morning, before returning to the 24-hour schedule.
A rain barrel might seem out of place inside a museum, but it serves as a learning tool at the University of Georgia Special Collections Libraries, helping community members from toddlers to seniors to learn about the centuries-long struggles with drinkable water in Georgia.
The authors of a new book that explores the lives of Georgians who were enslaved by a prominent Athens family in the 19th century will discuss the research that brought the story to light in a virtual book discussion.
While millions of readers have enjoyed the works of Emily Dickinson or read Aesop’s fables in mass-produced paperbacks, the University of Georgia Special Collections Libraries is offering a glimpse at rare books that go beyond the words to become artistic statements themselves.
UGA Libraries will be open and ready to serve the campus community throughout the summer. Librarians, archivists and staff will be available for help, research consultations and other activities — both in person and online — for students, faculty, and others, whether they are taking summer classes, preparing for the fall semester, working on independent projects, or have other needs.
