With a little help from a University of Georgia librarian, Jake Reinhart’s computer science project concluded with a good grade — plus with a patent for a new device, an academic paper under consideration for publication in a peer-reviewed journal, and a few hundred dollars in his pocket.

Reinhart, a management information systems major at UGA, was named a winner of the Libraries Undergraduate Research Award, a contest open to any student who has a private consultation with a librarian for help with a research project.

From technology and data tips to conquering imposter syndrome, UGA students can learn the skills they need to allow their research to blossom through the Spring Into Research workshop series, presented by UGA Libraries. 

The free online classes will familiarize students with the tools and services available online and on campus that can help you with your research. Whether you need tips on finding relevant research for your literature review or you are looking for new technologies to enhance your work, we have a session for you.

These free classes are open to all students and may be especially helpful for graduate students, with sessions specializing on data and citation management as well as other skills key to preparing a dissertation or thesis.

Sessions take place Monday, March 20 through Friday, March 24.

Due to Spring Break and an upcoming network maintenance, library patrons may notice changes to service hours and access.

On Sunday, March 5, all library locations will be closed, and EITS maintenance may cause disruptions to online services the same day. This can include the ability to log in to the website at libs.uga.edu to access e-books and databases and place holds on books through the library's catalog.

Intersession hours will be in place for March 6-10. For the Main and McBay Libraries, locations will be open 7:30 a.m. until 6 p.m., with service returning to regular hours on Saturday, March 11.

The Miller Learning Center will be closed Saturday, March 4 and Sunday, March 5 and will be open from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. March 6-10 before closing for Saturday March 11 and returning to 24 hour operations beginning Sunday March 12 at 1 p.m.

Community members are invited to celebrate the strength and resiliency of women at a Women’s History Month event exploring the art of Watkinsville potter Alice Woodruff, who recently presented the exhibition Warrior Women: From Invisible to Formidable One Hundred Strong.

You don’t have to know the secret handshake to get an inside look into one of the most politically consequential and culturally influential societies in the history of the United States, thanks to a new exhibit on display at the University of Georgia Special Collections Libraries.

For more than a decade Wormsloe, a historic property on the Isle of Hope near Savannah, has served as an outdoor classroom and research site for University of Georgia students and faculty. With a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Feb. 2, UGA celebrated the opening of an indoor space to enhance instruction, research and outreach in this unique setting.

The Georgia Review is pleased to announce we have been approved by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) to receive a Grants for Arts Projects award of $10,000. This grant will offset costs for a year’s worth of publication, which includes author payments and production costs. This grant is one of 1,251 Grants for Arts Projects awards totaling nearly $28.8 million that were announced by the NEA as part of its first round of fiscal year 2023 grants. 

“The National Endowment for the Arts is proud to support arts projects in communities nationwide,” said NEA Chair Maria Rosario Jackson. “Projects such as this one with The Georgia Review strengthen arts and cultural ecosystems, provide equitable opportunities for arts participation and practice, and contribute to the health of our communities and our economy.”

The UGA Libraries invites patrons to provide feedback on its website to ensure that user needs are at the center of a redesign project.

Members of the UGA community, including faculty, staff, and students, can participate in the project by filling out a short survey, found online at http://tinyurl.com/ugalibrarywebsite.

The open-ended questions allow users to discuss likes and dislikes to the current site at libs.uga.edu and offer any suggestions that may improve their experience. Participants can choose to answer some or all of the questions, and the survey should take most participants less than five minutes.

The survey will remain open until Friday, Feb. 10. 

Resolve to learn a new skill in 2023? UGA librarians are offering a new set of free workshops for students interested in learning to knit or crochet.

The January classes, held at the Miller Learning Center and the Makerspace at the McBay Science Library, are set at a beginner level and include a limited amount of supplies to take home.

The MLC classes will be held January 24 and 26, and feature free yarn, patterns, and needles or hooks along with a raffle prize. The drop in events are both scheduled for 3:30 p.m. with no limit on attendance. Space is more limited in the Makerspace series, to be held January 27 and February 3.
