Photographer discusses life, work at UGA Special Collections Libraries event

Famed photojournalist Nancy Ellison will discuss her career documenting the lives of American icons, capturing portraits of Hollywood stars, world leaders, and other figures in an event next week. The lecture, entitled "Altered Egos: Intimacy Among the Icons," will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 3 at the UGA Special Collections Libraries Building and is free and open to the public.

Ellison's portraits feature celebrities from Jack Nicholson to Boris Yeltsin. A freelance photojournalist for magazines such as TimeVogue, and Newsweek, Ellison's career has also spanned genres from author to producer. In addition to publishing 14 books, Ellison has served as producer include several award-winning plays such as Thurgood (2008), The Country Girl (2008), The Seafarer (2008), and Inherit the Wind (2007).

Civil Rights Digital Library Relaunches With New Look, 15 Years of Updated Content

A premier online compilation of digital civil rights content is relaunching with a new look and thousands of additional pieces of history.

The milestone marks a new era for the Civil Rights Digital Library (CRDL). This project brings together more than 200 libraries, archives, and museums to provide free online access to historical materials documenting the Civil Rights Movement in the United States. These collaborative partnerships are the bedrock of this national project.

UGA Libraries Open Access Agreements Benefit UGA Researchers

Two publisher agreements through University of Georgia Libraries will allow UGA researchers new no-cost opportunities to provide open access to their published research.

The contracts, known as “read and publish” or “transformative” agreements, go beyond subscription access, also covering open access publishing fees for UGA authors. The new agreements are with Cambridge University Press and Wiley, which is among the largest scholarly journal publishers. UGA-affiliated researchers whose papers are accepted by one of the more than 1,750 journals in the publishers’ catalogs are eligible to have their article processing charges (APCs) covered for articles published January 2022 to December 2024.

Construction Update on McBay Science Library

A construction project this summer at the University of Georgia’s McBay Science Library may disrupt quiet study for a time, yet access to books and library services will continue throughout the construction period.

The project entails upgrades to the library’s entryway, service desk, and entry floor study spaces, and is expected to be completed prior to the beginning of the fall semester. In addition, the work includes a permanent exhibit to honor Shirley Mathis McBay, the first Black student to receive a doctorate from UGA and national leader in promoting quality STEM education for people of color.

UGA Libraries Calls for Community Curators

Share your story - cartoon graphicMusic lovers can contribute to the Georgia music story on display at the University of Georgia Special Collections Libraries. 

The Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library, one of three special collections units at UGA, is preparing to open Georgia on My Mind: Finding Belonging in Music, an exhibition that explores the state’s music history through the genres, spaces, places and performers that have helped to define music in Georgia over time. The community is invited to curate a section of the exhibition, which is scheduled to open July 22.
