UGA Libraries Open Access Agreements Benefit UGA Researchers

Two publisher agreements through University of Georgia Libraries will allow UGA researchers new no-cost opportunities to provide open access to their published research.

The contracts, known as “read and publish” or “transformative” agreements, go beyond subscription access, also covering open access publishing fees for UGA authors. The new agreements are with Cambridge University Press and Wiley, which is among the largest scholarly journal publishers. UGA-affiliated researchers whose papers are accepted by one of the more than 1,750 journals in the publishers’ catalogs are eligible to have their article processing charges (APCs) covered for articles published January 2022 to December 2024.

“The new open access terms with Wiley and Cambridge are part of a series of initiatives by the University Libraries to promote open scholarship,” said Toby Graham, university librarian and associate provost. “Our aim is to support UGA researchers who wish to increase the visibility, citations, and global reach of their peer-reviewed publications by making them available beyond the paywalls that limit discoverability and access.”

In 2022, UGA Libraries established a pilot project to provide funding for open access publication fees for graduate students whose research papers have been accepted by peer-reviewed academic journals.

In addition, UGA researchers qualify for a 15 percent reduction in article processing charges to BioMedCentral, a premier publisher of Open Access journals in biomedical sciences, and a 10 percent discount toward article processing charges for MDPI, another multidisciplinary open access publisher.

“Open access publishing can be beneficial to both researchers and the public, allowing more broad dissemination and appreciation of cutting-edge scholarly work,” said Karen Burg, UGA vice president for research and Harbor Lights Chair in Biomedical Research. “I applaud UGA Libraries in taking this step to provide yet another way for our faculty and students to build their reputations and societal reach.”
