Job Summary

The production coordinator reports to the assistant manager for editorial, design, and production and is responsible for performing project management work consisting of a variety of tasks related to oversight of editing, design, and production of scholarly and trade books. The essential duties of this position include coordinating the editing, design, composition, e-book conversion and/or printing of new titles in the NewSouth Books imprint and Scholarly Publishing Services program; managing reprints and e-editions of backlist titles in the NewSouth Books imprint; and acting as a liaison with authors, freelancers, vendors, and press colleagues.

Duties and Responsibilities
Percentage of Time Duties and Responsibilities
25 Coordinates design, composition, and printing for assigned frontlist titles in the NewSouth Books imprint. Sets and tracks production schedules in Press-wide database. Requests POs and approves invoices. Maintains accurate documentation of technical requirements throughout design and production process for archiving and processing future editions.
25 Coordinates the editing and production of restocks and reprints in the NewSouth Books imprint. Copyedits and proofreads short passages as needed. Works with low stock committee to monitor inventory and set production priorities for backlist titles in this imprint.
20 Coordinates production processes for Scholarly Publishing Services projects. Evaluates manuscript materials at transmittal and communicates problems to supervisor. Sets and tracks production schedules in Press-wide database. Engages freelancers, packagers, compositors, and printers according to project needs. Reports discrepancies from quoted costs and deviations from established schedule to supervisor. Communicates with authors and publishing units regarding production details. Requests POs and approves invoices. Maintains accurate record of project costs for billing client
10 Coordinates e-book conversions and distribution for assigned titles in the NewSouth Books imprint. Troubleshoots metadata problems as needed.
10 Assists with production cost estimates.
5 Assists with file archiving.
5 Maintains flexibility and awareness of changes and needs in the department and organization by assuming similar duties and responsibilities as assigned.

 

Qualifications

Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.

Knowledge of traditional and current bookmaking processes and technologies.

Knowledge of standard book composition and editorial usage and style manuals.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in humanities, social science, or related discipline. 

One year of experience related to book design, composition, electronic publishing formats, digital file conversion, or printing technology preferred.

One-year of design, production management and/or manuscript editorial experience with a book or scholarly journal publisher or equivalent freelance design, production, and editorial experience with book publishers preferred.
