Giesen, Associate Professor of History and Grisham Master Teacher, Mississippi State University, and Derek Alderman, Professor of Geography, University of Tennessee. Discussion will include the social, cultural, and economic impact of notorious pests such as the boll weevil and kudzu in modern Georgia. Dr. Brian Drake, Senior Lecturer, Department of History, University of Georgia, will moderate the event. 

About the speakers:

In 2026, the United States will mark the 250^th anniversary of its founding. In anticipation of this event, the University of Georgia Press has developed the Georgia Open History Library: From Colony to Statehood in the New Union. This resource provides free digital access to 45 out-of-print volumes focused on Georgia from the colony’s founding through the American Revolution.

The Russell Library is hosting a conversation with Atlanta Journal-Constitution editorial cartoonist Mike Luckovich in conjunction with the traveling exhibition Lines with Power and Purpose: Editorial Cartoons.

The Russell Library is hosting a conversation with Atlanta Journal-Constitution senior reporter and former Washington correspondent Tamar Hallerman on April 8 as part of its annual Congress Week celebration.

In 1979, Randall Bewley, Curtis Crowe, Vanessa Briscoe Hay, and Michael Lachowski formed the band Pylon in Athens, Georgia. All connected to the local art scene, what the members lacked in musical experience they made up for with bold experimentation. The group created a danceable, new wave sound and unique visual style that became a foundational part of the emerging music scene in Athens during the late 1970s and early 1980s.

In 1969, professor Jack Kehoe journeyed to Italy to create a unique opportunity for University of Georgia students. He found the ideal site for an experiential learning environment amidst the history, culture and beauty of Cortona.

"Experiencing Cortona: Celebrating 50 Years of UGA Study Abroad" reflects on the program’s history with a display of original artifacts, photographs, documents and more drawn from the Cortona Program Records, a part of the university’s archives housed in the Hargrett Library.

Dr. Marion Nestle is the Paulette Goddard Professor Emerita of nutrition, food studies and public health at New York University. She is also a consumer advocate, nutritionist and author of six award-winning books. Nestle’s research examines scientific and socioeconomic influences on food choice, obesity and food safety, with an emphasis on the role of food marketing. Among her recent honors are the John Dewey Award for Distinguished Public Service from Bard College and the Public Health Hero Award from the University of California School of Public Health at Berkeley.
