Celebrate Georgia writers this fall with a reading from the author of Erasure or with a special Italian dinner with the author of Under the Tuscan Sun.

The University of Georgia Libraries will host the two newest members of the Georgia Writers Hall of Fame with special events open to the community later this year. Novelist and cookbook author Frances Mayes will be a featured guest for a plated dinner Saturday, Oct. 28, and poet Percival Everett will read his award-winning work on Thursday, Nov. 2, both at the UGA Special Collections Libraries Building in Athens.

Six student-curated exhibits on topics from 18^th century gardening to ballet and baseball cards are on display at the University of Georgia Special Collections Libraries.

Documentarian George King will discuss his 20-year journey documenting the life of contemporary folk artist and musician Lonnie Holley, during a free screening hosted by the Walter J. Brown Media Archives & Peabody Awards Collection.

The event, held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 2 at Cine (234 West Hancock Avenue), is free and open to the general public as well as UGA students, faculty and staff.

­Six University of Georgia faculty members have been chosen as 2023 Special Collections Faculty Teaching Fellows, a program designed to help instructors incorporate UGA Libraries’ archival materials and active learning strategies into courses.

A number of UGA Libraries will operate under limited hours during the intersession period between the fall and spring semesters, with all locations closed for winter break beginning Dec. 24, reopening Jan. 3.

Intersession hours will be in place at the Main Library, McBay Science Library, and Miller Learning Center beginning Wednesday, Dec. 14, which means that the locations will not be open for the usual night hours. The MLC will be closed during weekends, and all locations will be closed on Sundays until classes resume on Jan. 9.

Some libraries will remain open during normal business hours, including the Special Collections Libraries and the Music Library, but the Art Library and Map & Government Information Library will be open by appointment only. The Carnegie Library, located on the Health Sciences Campus, will be closed for much of the intersession period, although students with approved card access can access the basement study area during certain hours. 

A premier online compilation of digital civil rights content is relaunching with a new look and thousands of additional pieces of history.

The milestone marks a new era for the Civil Rights Digital Library (CRDL). This project brings together more than 200 libraries, archives, and museums to provide free online access to historical materials documenting the Civil Rights Movement in the United States. These collaborative partnerships are the bedrock of this national project.

When Jennifer Tesler started teaching her students about the Harlem Renaissance, she couldn’t help but notice the similarities between the New York borough known for its cultural and political history and their own eclectic, diverse hometown of Athens. In fact, the Georgia city has ties to influential writer and scholar W.E.B. Dubois and several of the Harlem Renaissance musicians, who performed at the Morton Theatre.
